Anthology submissions

Listen Softly London is open for submissions of poetry and flash fiction for an upcoming anthology on the theme of hardship.

The anthology will be co-edited by Listen Softly London editor Dominic Stevenson, and poet, novelist, and University of Edinburgh Writer in Residence, Claire Askew.

Hardship is a slippery concept to pin down. One person’s hard day could be another person’s walk in the park; we’re routinely told that times are hard, and yet, don’t we have it better now than we ever have before? Hardship takes many forms: it means different things for different people, and often exists at intersections of oppression and experience.

For this anthology, we’re interested to read writing that springs from this prompt, however it is interpreted — from #FirstWorldProblems to narratives of personal and/or sociopolitical struggle. How hardship is defined is up to you — though we are particularly keen to read pieces that are original and contemporary, addressing the times we live in.

We are keen to hear from as wide a range of voices as possible, and particularly encourage submissions from disabled writers, writers of colour, LGBTQIA+ writers, and women writers. We will operate a blind submissions process where you will only be asked for your contact details, and no biographical information. In the event of your work being selected, we will contact you for more information.

Each writer can submit up to three poems (up to 65 lines each), or one piece of flash fiction (up to 1,000 words).

Each successful writer will receive one copy of the anthology, and they will also be invited, along with a guest, to the launches of the anthology – one of which will take place in London, and one in Edinburgh.

Unfortunately, due to the anticipated volume of submissions, we will not be able to provide feedback on unsuccessful submissions.

Submissions are free, and you do not have to have bought any previous Listen Softly London publications to enter.

The deadline for submissions is Sunday 1 October 2017.
